Preprocessing
The software PATTERN EXPERT airspect
performs all the well-established and necessary steps of spectrum preprocessing.
These include
- removal of artifact ranges at both ends of the spectra
- smoothing / denoising:
Savitzky-Golay filter, Gauss filter, Wavelet filter
- removal of discontinuous jumps
- baseline correction: spline interpolation, polynomial regression
- normalization of the ordinate scale:
maximum normalization, area normalization, vector normalization
- X-calibration (peak alignment)

The user-defined settings for these preprocessing steps do not apply to individual spectra but globally to the entire Knowledge Base.
That is, you don't need to normalize each spectrum separately, but the normalization of all your spectra is done fully automatically
on the basis of your global settings.
This helps to make working with your spectra very easy. Moreover, if your final classification system is subsequently used
in some practical application for analyzing and classifying spectra of unknown samples, this avoids a dependency on
unpredictable decisions of future operators.
