Relevant Spectral Locations
In addition to using the actual classifying function of the software
PATTERN EXPERT airspect, a very important and interesting
aspect for the user is to know the exact locations of those spectral features, which are used by the system for distinguishing the classes.
A set of these so-called "ROIs" (Regions Of Interest), which is appropriate to the given problem, is determined automatically during the
Recognition Module training
process. Knowledge of these feature locations might provide valuable information about the chemical, biological or medical background
of the problem at hand.
Therefore, the software PATTERN EXPERT airspect
provides tools for analyzing the spectral locations selected by the classification system.
The feature list can be displayed on screen or imported into other programs. Or you may use the so-called "ROI Viewer", which
provides a graphical representation of the used spectral intervals, optionally in combination with selected spectrum and/or
class mean curves.
The relevant spectral locations may be compared to biomarkers, which are important research objectives in proteomics. Whereas in proteomics
mass spectrometry is used to identify appropriate "indicator" peptides or proteins, infra red or Raman methods may be employed to determine
other metabolic properties, which are particularly useful for solving the given problem.
